Handy Tips for Efficient Board Development
Board development is an essential step in creating and maintaining a successful NPO. PHMC’s Targeted Solutions Director and ACE Program Co-Director, Liza M. Rodriguez, Ph.D., has offered some useful tips for board development and governance. To begin, the roles and responsibilities of a board need to be clear. A board needs to ensure that the organization stays in compliance with the laws and regulations relating to non-profit corporations; determine organization’s mission, strategies, and program priorities; and then ensure that the organization utilizes resources toward fulfillment of its mission. A board is also responsible for hiring the Executive Director to manage the corporation and for evaluating the Executive Director’s performance.

An effective board changes over time, recruiting new members to meet the changing needs of their organization. Board members elect qualified officers and appoint qualified committee chairs, as well as serve as “public ambassadors” of the organization.

For more information regarding board development, contact Tonya Clemon.
