Proposal Writing for Foundations

Are you targeting the funders that best match your mission and services? Are you making the most compelling case for your service specialty? Does your agency have a standard proposal package that can be adapted to multiple funders? The following are a few basic tips to begin establishing an effective proposal writing system at your agency:

  1. “Take an honest look at yourself”
Conduct an informal agency self-assessment to identify and clearly define the kinds of services and programs that differentiate your agency from others.
  2. “Become a policy wonk”
Keep abreast of non-profit program development trends and policy developments by reading up on the latest news (or signing up for their email lists) from organizations like Public Private Ventures, The Brookings Institution, Pew Charitable Trusts, and The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
  3. “Know your foundation environment”
Identify local, regional, and possibly national funders that are specifically interested in supporting the types of services that you offer. Subscribe to website services like http://fconline.fdncenter.org/.
  4. “Have a proposal Boiler Plate”
Develop a comprehensive proposal that can then be used or built on for multiple funders and which covers the following areas:

    -Organizational Background

-Environment/Context for Program (data that shows need for program)

    -Detailed Program Description

-Expected Program Results (measurable changes in people that participate in your program)

    -Project and Agency Budget

  5. “Establish a publishing team”
Identify the best writers/editors in your agency that can help pull program knowledge and ideas together into narrative masterpieces.
  6. “Attach the right value
    to your staff and programs”

Make sure that you price your services/products according to their true costs in your proposal budgets.
